Everywhere the Blue Light

Recently I went to a part of Denmark close to the Chalk Cliffs on Rügen. It was made especially famous by Casper David Friedrich who painted a sublime painting of him and his wife Caroline on their honeymoon with a friend on the cliffs. He used the chalk cliffs in his painting with an overhanging tree to create a compositional vortex like an eye looking out to sea. Of course my little panel painting is nothing like CDF’s magnificent picture, but I found myself imagining how they got there from Germany and painted the couple in a gaff rigged cutter, racing across the Baltic Sea - TH
